There’s a quiet kind of cool that comes from 46Works, the kind born not in a marketing department, but in the hands of a master. Shiro Nakajima, the man behind the banner, doesn’t chase hype; he builds it, one meticulously crafted project at a time. From his wooden workshop nestled in the foothills of the Yatsugatake Mountains, Nakajima-san has once again joined forces with BMW Motorrad Sagamihara for a follow-up to their 2024 R12 nineT Complete Custom. And for 2026, the bar has somehow been raised. Only nine of these stunning machines will ever exist, a limited-run production style custom from one of the best in the game.

This latest creation, dubbed the 2026 Model R12 nineT 46Works Complete Custom #02, follows the spirit of its predecessor but with a sharper focus on form and flow. The 2024 model sold out instantly, just six units were built, proving there’s a global appetite for Nakajima’s restrained yet soul-stirring design philosophy. Now, the second run brings a fresh take, balancing BMW’s modern retro underpinnings with that unmistakable 46Works DNA.

For years, Nakajima-san lived the fast life as the founder of the legendary Japanese outfit Ritmo Sereno. He served as the principal engineer, and it was the place to go if you wanted a full-blown custom race bike or a fast-charging retro racer for the road. But in stepping back, he in many ways, stepped up his game. Retreating to his beautiful timber workshop to create one single custom masterpiece after another. Not rushed like before, and having time to truly create perfection. But in 2024, he saw an opening, and this second production bike further helps to fill the gap between stock as a rock bike and a full-blown show machine.

Nakajima describes this edition as “minimising costs while bringing out the charm of the model.” It’s a classic 46Works approach: do less, but do it flawlessly. The bike’s entire exterior is cloaked in 46 Blue, a bespoke colour mixed exclusively for this project. Subtle linework flows across the tank and body, emphasising the R12’s factory curves while giving it a more rounded, unmistakably BMW silhouette. It’s the kind of blue that looks different every time you walk around it, sometimes metallic, sometimes matte, but always purposeful.

While the paint may steal your attention first, it’s the details that keep you staring. Each bike wears a machined 46Works emblem, TANAX 46 mirrors, and a bikini cowl paired with a single-seat cowl, for a classic cafe racer look. The mirrors alone say everything about Nakajima’s design discipline: fully functional for rear visibility yet crafted to lower the bike’s visual profile, lending it that low and lean stance.

Underneath the blue skin, the R12 nineT remains true to its upgraded BMW bones. The latest chassis improvements have transformed it into an effortlessly fun and confidence-inspiring ride, something even the purists can’t ignore. While this custom doesn’t mess with internals or geometry, the visual transformation alone changes the way it feels to swing a leg over it. It’s that rare case where form actually deepens the sense of function.

At 2,998,000 yen before tax (around US$19,900), it’s a bargain. A brand new bike, with custom paint and the wand of a magician waved over it, really, it’s a steal. The recommended Micro TFT meter panel, an optional extra at 93,940 yen, adds a dash of modern tech to the analogue soul. Motorrad Sagamihara will handle sales exclusively, and there’s already a display bike in-store for those lucky enough to see it in person. For everyone else, prepare for nine names to be written on a waiting list that fills before the ink dries.

For those who missed the original 2024 run, this is redemption. That first six-bike series sold out instantly, each one fetching a premium over the stock R12’s sticker price. Clearly, Nakajima-san has tapped into something far greater than a cosmetic refresh; it’s a study in restraint, in how a few perfect changes can unlock the heart and class that sits beneath a BMW’s skin. For nine fortunate riders, that whisper will soon turn into a perfectly tuned growl echoing through the Japanese Alps. For the rest of us, we’ll just have to keep scrolling Nakajima’s Instagram feed, dreaming of beautiful blue BMWs.
