Modern superbikes are extraordinary machines. Armed with enough sensors, processors and rider aids to make fighter jets jealous, today’s litre bikes can accelerate harder, brake later and corner faster than ever before. But as performance has become increasingly dependent on software, something else has slowly disappeared from the equation: mechanical purity. Carriero Corse’s MC04 asks a simple question. What if the superbike’s relentless pursuit of performance had continued down a purely analogue path?

Built around a 1991 Honda CB750 Seven Fifty, the Italian engineering firm’s latest creation is less a custom motorcycle and more a full-scale development exercise. Weight is down from 215kg dry to just 180kg wet, it’s running an enlarged 866cc version of Honda’s air-cooled inline four and wrapped in purpose-built carbon fibre bodywork, the MC04 delivers modern sports bike thinking without traction control, riding modes or electronic intervention. Every improvement comes from engineering, not software.

That philosophy is deeply rooted in the origins of racing itself. Before rider aids, lap time came from skill, courage and mechanical ingenuity. Riders modified their own machines to gain an edge, continuously refining chassis geometry, suspension and power delivery in pursuit of speed. Carriero Corse has embraced that same mindset, approaching the CB750 not as a classic to preserve but as a platform to develop. The result is a motorcycle that feels less like a restored icon and more like an alternate history of Honda’s original superbike.

Almost nothing remains untouched. While the main frame hoop survives, the rear subframe has been completely redesigned, and the entire riding position shifted forward to improve front-end loading and rider control. A bespoke swingarm shortens the wheelbase by a remarkable 136 millimetres and features adjustable geometry, bringing the MC04’s dimensions into modern hypersport territory. Weight distribution was carefully targeted at 50.5% forward, demonstrating the sort of obsessive chassis development normally reserved for factory race programmes.

The suspension package reveals just how serious the project really is. The original twin-shock arrangement has been replaced with a fully engineered Pro-Link monoshock conversion featuring interchangeable rocker designs that allow changes to motion ratios and suspension kinematics. At both ends, premium Öhlins hardware provides four-way adjustment, while bespoke triple clamps allow the steering geometry itself to be altered in multiple ways. Rake can be reduced from 27.5 degrees to an aggressive 24.7 degrees, dramatically sharpening steering response and transforming the bike’s character.

Then there is the bodywork. Designed in collaboration with Colombi Design and manufactured almost entirely from carbon fibre, every surface exists for a reason. Aside from a Ducati front fender, all the other elements are crafted in-house from carbon fibre using a wet lay-up vacuum bagging process. The flowing forms follow the motorcycle’s mechanical architecture, exposing rather than concealing the engineering beneath. The air-cooled four remains the visual centrepiece, framed by carbon panels that wrap tightly around the chassis while proudly displaying the suspension and exhaust systems. It is a design language driven by function rather than fashion, but boy, it looks good!

Power comes from an extensively reworked version of Honda’s famously durable inline four. Capacity rises to 866cc thanks to newly designed oversized pistons that not only increase displacement but reduce reciprocating mass. Compression climbs to 10.4:1, while one of the donor bike’s biggest shortcomings has been addressed through the installation of a six-speed gearbox sourced from the CBX750. The result promises an engine that retains the character of the original while delivering sharper acceleration and a more modern spread of performance.

Supporting the revised power plant is a collection of beautifully executed engineering solutions. The exhaust system combines titanium headers with a stainless silencer in a compact 4-2-1 configuration, while a redesigned aluminium fuel tank integrates modern breather and catch-tank systems inspired by contemporary racing practice. A custom hydraulic clutch conversion replaces the original cable arrangement, complete with CNC-machined components and a bespoke engine cover that incorporates an oil sight glass.

Despite its analogue ethos, the MC04 is no museum piece. The electrical system has been redesigned from scratch around a lightweight lithium battery and a compact electronic control module housed beneath the seat. An ECUMaster display provides comprehensive engine monitoring, while modern lighting technology has been seamlessly integrated using Yamaha R1 headlights and custom-designed LED systems. Crucially, these electronics exist to inform the rider rather than override them. There are no rider aids here, just data, feedback and complete freedom.

The MC04 ultimately succeeds because it refuses to chase nostalgia. Rather than recreating the past, Carriero Corse has imagined a future that never happened, a world where superbike performance continued to evolve through metallurgy, geometry and physics rather than processors and algorithms. The result is a motorcycle that proves there is still something profoundly appealing about unfiltered performance. No safety nets. No electronic intervention. Just a rider, a machine and the twist of the throttle to determine what happens next.
