The new Langen Lightspeed marks a significant moment for modern British motorcycle manufacturing. Unveiled in production form at Gunhill Studios, this limited-run machine signals Langen’s evolution from an ambitious boutique manufacturer into a legitimate force in performance engineering. Limited to 185 individually hand-built motorcycles, the Lightspeed pairs a 1,190cc V-Twin producing 185 horsepower with a dry weight of just 185 kilograms, an intentional symmetry that underscores the precision and purpose behind the project. Conceived and executed with an unwavering commitment to craftsmanship, the Lightspeed represents Langen’s vision of what a contemporary British performance motorcycle can be: engineered with modern capability, crafted with traditional skill, and built for those who value rarity over volume.

Langen Motorcycles is the brainchild of Chris Ratcliffe, who grew up absolutely surrounded by the sound and smell of all things two-wheels. His mum was Manchester’s first female motorcycle dispatch rider at 17, and his dad worked for Cotton and CCM. For Chris, motorcycles weren’t a hobby, they were simply life. After studying automotive design and engineering, he joined TVR’s development team before eventually landing at CCM as their first design engineer. Over nine years, he helped develop the GP450 and the Spitfire series, bikes that didn’t just sell, but helped redefine a brand.

But Ratcliffe isn’t wired for compromise. When he realised that motorcycle design was increasingly dictated by budgets instead of ideas, he made an extreme decision: he sold his house to finance a new company. The philosophy would be the inverse of mass production: design first, worry about cost later. The name of that company became Langen Motorcycles, founded on the belief that motorcycles should be created the way they once were: by hand, with vision leading every decision. His first creation, the Langen Two-Stroke, proved the formula, a rampaging smoker that wowed the world and rode like an absolute rocketship.

The Lightspeed represents the next evolution of that philosophy. Beneath the carbon bodywork sits a 1,190cc liquid-cooled V-Twin, developed by Rotax, manufactured by Buell, and tuned by Langen’s own electronics package. It produces 185 hp at 10,600 rpm and 138 Nm of torque, giving the Lightspeed a power-to-weight ratio of approximately 1000bhp per tonne. A 6-speed gearbox, hydraulically actuated slipper clutch and Renthal 520 chain ensure the power delivery balances aggression with control.

The chassis is a showcase of British small-batch engineering. A high-tensile steel tubular space frame forms the core, wrapped in full V-weave carbon fibre bodywork. Up front, Öhlins FGRT 301 USD forks with split compression and rebound damping continue the performance intent, paired with twin Öhlins STX piggyback shocks at the rear. HEL Performance supplies the braking system, gripping twin 320mm EBC discs at the front. The lightweight forged aluminium wheels are a work of art, 3.5″ at the front and a dramatic 6.0″ rear, wearing a 240-section Pirelli Diablo Rosso III, to complete the architecture.

Despite its raw performance credentials, the Lightspeed is not a track refugee forced onto the road. It’s designed as a performance road bike, with ergonomics and rider comfort worked into the geometry. Subtle cues nod to 1960s racing machinery, clean proportions, exposed frame, purposeful stance, combined with modern usability and electronics, including traction control, launch control, wheelie control, cruise control and ABS. The CNC-machined dash and TFT display offer a tactile experience that feels more instrument than interface.

Langen’s approach to ownership is as individual as the motorcycle itself. Each Lightspeed is built to order, and every customer is invited to the Wigan facility to choose paint, finishes and detailing. A £1,000 deposit secures a build slot. First customer deliveries are planned for Summer 2026, with export markets, including the United States, beginning in early 2027. Pricing starts at £44,400 OTR, an easy-to-justify figure when you consider that absolutely every last component is built to an incredible standard, and the Two-Stroke is more than holding its value.

The Lightspeed is a motorcycle born from conviction. Where most manufacturers chase volume, Ratcliffe chases soul. Where others optimise for cost, Langen optimises for beauty, feel and mechanical honesty. In an era of mass-produced machines and algorithmic design, the Lightspeed is a reminder of what happens when engineering is driven not by spreadsheets, but by obsession. Chris Ratcliffe set out to build motorcycles the way he believes they should be made. With the Lightspeed, he hasn’t just proven the idea; he has redefined it to breathtaking new heights.
