I chose to illustrate Prince on his custom CM400a Hondamatic because I think his personal style and identity is reflected really well through his motorcycle. The ability to express yourself through your machine is what excites me about the custom motorcycle scene. Prince’s willingness to transgress the boundaries of masculinity and embrace his sexuality and gender is what made him so appealing and ahead of his time. He wore his androgyny as a badge of honor, just like the decals of the Love Symbol seen on his bike, a symbol of both gender signs. I think it’s important to see more images like this one to break down the stereotypes of masculinity and motorcycles.
